What a way to finish out the swimming program at the Olympics! Team USA maintained its winning streak in the men’s 4×100-meter medley relay, holding off Great Britain to set a new world record of 3:26.78. The Americans have never lost this race in the Olympics!
The American men used their placement in lane 1 to their advantage — they had smooth water on one side, which is a huge help in reducing resistance. Ryan Murphy started off strong on the backstroke leg, and Michael Andrew did his best to maintain that lead, fighting off Great Britain’s Adam Peaty stroke for stroke. Caeleb Dressel crushed the butterfly leg in 49 seconds, and Zach Apple finished it out with a stellar freestyle leg, increasing the lead to 0.73 seconds and touching first for the win.
This relay secures Caeleb Dressel his fifth gold medal in this Olympics — he is tied with Mark Spitz, Matt Biondi and Michael Phelps for this record.
Michael Andrew finally made it on the podium after his performance in this relay. He’s been close in numerous races this week. Zach Apple adds another gold to his collection, after winning gold in the 4×100 free relay. Ryan Murphy wins his first gold of these Games in this relay, after taking silver in the 200 backstroke and bronze in the 100 backstroke.
