In the biggest upset of tonight’s session, 17-year-old American Lydia Jacoby won gold in the women’s 100-meter breaststroke.
Tatjana Schoenmaker of South Africa was out fast — she broke the Olympic record in the qualifying heats. It looked like it was going to be a neck-in-neck showdown between her and defending gold medalist Lilly King, but Jacoby surged ahead in the final 20 meters to touch first in 1:04.95.
Schoenmaker took sliver in 1:05.22. King touched 3rd in 1:05.54. She was quick to congratulate Jacoby on the win, giving her a big hug before exiting the pool.
Jacoby is the first Olympic swimmer from Alaska, USA. And at 17, we definitely haven’t seen the last of her!
