Tis the season for family, friends and most importantly holiday training! Swimmers celebrate the holiday season and their time off school and work a bit differently than their non-swimming peers. We know coaches around the world are cooking up some mighty fine workouts for their athletes, so I wanted to share a workout I ran with the Detroit Athletic Club masters swim group I coach. It was a 4,000 short course yards workout titled: The 12 Days of Christmas!
On the ___ day of Christmas my swim coach gave to me…

We started with a 250 free to get the body warmed up! I always like to get the legs engaged first thing after warming up, so the 12 x 25s kick alternating over water and underwater was a great way to expand the lungs and core. Moving through the workout, you can start to see a pattern emerge of alternating free and kick sets with varied intensity. The finale of the workout is a 50s ladder of every stroke finishing with a 50 Fly fast!

It’s always fun to mix up training and keep things fresh. Doing so breaks up the monotony of working out, and keeps my athletes on their toes. If you’re looking for creative workouts, be sure to download our app for access to our entire workout library!
